The tense stand-off between Ukraine and the Russia Federation over who controls flights in and out of Crimea continues. Early this week Russia issued Federation passports to Simferopol-based controllers working within its newly formed “Crimea Air Navigation” branch, the latest gesture in its effort to wrest the Simferopol flight information region (FIR) away from Ukrainian State Air Traffic Service Enterprise (UkSATSE) control and absorb it into its own air traffic control operations.

The Bell Helicopter Training Academy has received Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approval to conduct Bell 412EP/412EPI B1.3 and B2 Part 147 technical training at its Singapore Service Center. The Australian CASA approval expands the academy’s ability to provide regulated maintenance courses in the Asia-Pacific region.

Bombardier Aerospace’s Singapore Service Center has entered into an agreement with Honeywell Aerospace that will allow the MRO to offer retrofit, modification and upgrade services for Honeywell products to operators of Bombardier business jets in the region. Operators will see simplified logistical arrangements as they will no longer have to leave Singapore for complex avionics upgrades.

EDN Aviation of Van Nuys, Calif., has been acquired by Velocity Aerospace Group. The move expands Velocity’s repair and overhaul service capabilities into control panel services. Founded in 1991, EDN is an FAA- and EASA-approved repair station and carries ISO9001:2000 certification. It specializes in the manufacture, repair and refurbishment of aircraft cockpit panels. EDN also specializes in multi-unit fabrication and engineering/design services for various panel components such as light plates, circuit-breaker panels, control wheels and knobs.

West Star Aviation has nearly completed a 47,000-sq-ft maintenance facility at its East Alton (ALN), Ill. location. In addition to the new maintenance facility, the multimillion-dollar expansion includes a 14,000-sq-ft wood shop and 6,000-sq-ft accessory repair shop, bringing the East Alton facilities from 250,000 to 317,300 sq ft and 300 employees.

The new facilities are scheduled to be completed next month, at which time West Star will host an open house.

Transport Canada has granted Innotech Aviation a rating in the category of advanced composites. The rating allows the facility to perform advanced repair, modification and replacement of primary composite aircraft structural components. This includes all fairings and flight control surfaces on the Bombardier Global and Challenger series.
