US airlines continued to post improved on-time performance numbers in September—the third straight month they did so and beating the mark they set last year, according to Portland, Ore.-based FlightStats.com. The year-to-date numbers tell a similar story about the seven largest U.S. carriers, said the report, as all improved their performance last month with Southwest Airlines and Northwest Airlines leading the group in year-over-year progress.In fact, September numbers scored the highest year-to-date, registering an overall on-time performance of more than 83.06 percent.

Twenty four of the 38 U.S. carriers FlightStats tracked posted better than 80 percent on-time numbers for the month. Hawaiian Airlines topped the September list at 94.1 percent, followed by Frontier at 92.75 percent, Mesaba at 91.21 percent, Horizon at 91.2 percent and Virgin at 90.82 percent.
