Captain, Flight Attendant from Air France Flight 447 Identified

Search teams have found the bodies of the captain and a flight attendant among the victims of the crash of Air France Flight 447, the company confirmed today. So far crews have recovered at least 50 bodies from the Atlantic Ocean out of the 228 aboard the Airbus A330-200 when it crashed in the early morning hours of June 1.

While Brazilian teams continue the search for bodies, French authorities comb the area for more aircraft parts and lead the search for the CVR and FDR, suspected to lie as deep as 15,000 feet below the surface. Two French ships continue to trawl a 50-square-mile area of the Atlantic Ocean, some 400 miles off the coast of the Brazilian island archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, pulling U.S. Navy underwater listening devices in an effort to detect the exact location of the flight recorders.

Designed to emit so-called “pings” for only about a month, the flight recorders will stop signaling within a week, at which time the chances of finding them will diminish to virtually nil.
