Conversions Bring New Life to Old Regional Jets

Montreal-based Project Phoenix has joined a growing number of companies offering a program to convert used Bombardier CRJ200 regional jets into executive aircraft that each sell for about $18 million complete. Project Phoenix is a partner in the program with Aerospace Concepts of Montreal and Action Aviation of the UK.

Aerospace Concepts and Project Phoenix will handle sourcing and maintenance and manage the completion process while Action Aviation will focus on marketing and sale of the aircraft, dubbed the CRJ-Phoenix. The actual completion work on the aircraft will be outsourced to independent centers.

The CRJ-Phoenix is expected to have a max range (with auxiliary fuel tanks) of 3,000 nm. The initial market focus will be on Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Despite the splash made by its launch at the Dubai Airshow this week, Phoenix is not the first company to recognize the business aviation market potential of the CRJ. Fokker Services in the Netherlands, Indianapolis Jet Center, PATS Aircraft and Canadian interiors specialist Flying Colours are also converting CRJs into executive-outfitted airplanes.
