Embraer delivers first Phenom 300, Meets Bizav Goal for 2009

Embraer is looking back at a relatively successful 2009. The Brazilian manufacturer delivered a total of 244 airplanes, two more than its goal for the year, and 115 of them were business jets, 79 more than were delivered in 2008.

The jump in shipments can be explained by the ramping up of deliveries of Embraer’s $3.745 million Phenom 100. The five-passenger very light jet was certified in December 2008 and two were delivered before the end of that year. The company delivered 93 Phenom 100s last year. On the other hand, deliveries of the well established, super-midsize $27.45 million Legacy 600 totaled 33 in 2008 but dropped to 18 last year.

The Lineage 1000, Embraer’s largest business jet and an executive variant of the E190 regional airliner, is priced at $49.25 million. It was certified last year and three of the finished 19-passenger airplanes were delivered before year-end.

The new $8.14 million Phenom 300, a six- to seven-passenger light jet, was certified in December 2009 and the first airplane was delivered at the company’s São José dos Campos headquarters on December 29.

The first Phenom 300 went to Executive Flight Services of Kansas City, Mo. Executive Flight took delivery of the aircraft on behalf of an unidentified customer and will operate it through its managed aircraft program.

Executive AirShare, the parent company of Executive Flight, has orders for six Phenom 300s, with deliveries spread from 2011 through 2013.

Last month Embraer delivered the fourth Lineage 1000 to Al Jaber Aviation of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. It is the first Lineage to join the Al Jaber fleet and will begin on-demand charter service next month. Al Jaber already has two Legacy 600s and firm orders for four more Lineage 1000s, as well as for four “mid-light” Legacy 450s and four midsize Legacy 500s. The Lineage 1000 will allow the operator to provide nonstop service between the Emirates and London.

While the total deliveries of commercial, executive and government/military jets gave a positive spin to the 2009 report, the backlog numbers were less to dance about. The firm backlog as of Dec. 31, 2008, totaled $20.9 billion. The total backlog as of Dec. 31, 2009, was $16.6 billion.
