Embry-Riddle’s Ph.D. Program To Take Off in May

Next May, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will begin classes for its new aviation Ph.D. degree programs available online through its Worldwide Campus division. According to Embry-Riddle professor of applied aviation studies and aviation program Ph.D. residency coordinator Alan Stolzer, the program is the first of its kind in the world. There will be three cognates–or majors–in the aviation program: operations, security and safety, but only operations will be available to students enrolled in the first class next spring.

He told NBAA Convention News the online program will take about three years to complete and will require each student to undertake an annual six-day residency at one of Embry-Riddle’s campuses. The program can be completed in as little as two years or as many as seven.

Only 25 students will be admitted to the initial class, which begins in May. The deadline to apply to the aviation Ph.D. program is January 15. Those applying must have taken the graduate record examination within the last five years and provide official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work. They’ll also need to include a statement of goals, writing sample, three letters of recommendation and a résumé.

After the first class begins in May, aviation Ph.D. class startups will shift to every fall semester, starting with 2009. Tuition is $980 per credit hour, while books are estimated at around $300 per class and each annual residency will add another $1,200 to the bill.
