For the first time at the Dubai Air Show, Eurocopter (Stand A140) is showing its full-scale mockup of the in-development EC175 medium-twin helicopter. The manufacturer recently disclosed some performance numbers for the seven-metric-ton-class rotorcraft, which will compete mainly with the AgustaWestland AW139. What is now official is the EC175’s radius of action offshore–270 nm at ISA+20–and a cruise speed of about 135 knots. Four fuel tanks provide a capacity of 600 U.S. gallons. One optional tank increases this by 90 U.S. gallons, which translates into a total radius of action of 320 nm.
Eurocopter pledges that the EC175 will be able to remain afloat in sea states up to level six. The main gearbox has an emergency lubrication system able to operate for 30 minutes after total loss of lubrication. In maintenance, MSG-3 methodology is expected to make maintenance needs lighter. A pair of Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6C-67E turboshaft engines powers the 16-passenger rotorcraft.
First flight is now imminent, as it is expected to take place by the end of the year. A 50-50 Sino-European effort by Eurocopter and Avicopter, the EC175 will be known in China as the Z15.
