Gulf Coast Airports Recover after Gustav’s Visit

Temporary flight restrictions remain in place around Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), New Orleans Lakefront (NEW) and parts of Southeast Louisiana, following yesterday’s landfall of Hurricane Gustav. The Category II storm battered the Gulf Coast with 110-mph winds and prompted the FAA to issue TFRs throughout Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.

As of this morning, the following airports had reopened: Baton Rouge (BTR); Acadiana (ARA); Chennault (CWF); Lafayette (LFT); Lake Charles (LCH); Houma-Terrebonne (HUM); Alexandria (AEX); Mobile Municipal (MOB); Downtown Mobile (BFM); and Southeast Texas Regional (BPT). Meanwhile, business aviation groups such as NBAA and Corporate Aviation Response and Emergency (Care) are monitoring the situation and preparing to arrange relief flights if necessary.

Care president Marianne Stevenson said the organization works with NBAA and other groups, such as Mercy Medical Group and Convoy of Hope, to arrange supplies, resources and transportation to and from disaster areas. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the group transported thousands of pounds of supplies to the New Orleans area, Stevenson said.

She added, however, that Care services might not be needed because of the government’s timely response and preparation for Hurricane Gustav. “The government learned its lesson from Katrina,” she said.

“It stepped up and handled the situation.”
