Women in Aviation Conference Sets New Records

The 19th annual Women in Aviation International (WAI) conference, held late last week, drew a record number of attendees to the San Diego venue. More than 250 of the 3,320 participants were military members, which broke all previous records for military participation, not to mention overall total conference attendance.

The 224 exhibitors and the amount and number of scholarships awarded–$710,855 to 80 participants–also shattered previous records. Notable speakers included aviation legend Chuck Yeager; NASA shuttle commander Pamela Melroy; Deborah Limb, Boeing’s director of payload and structures; and Dr.

Peter Diamandis, CEO of Zero-G. At the conference, WAI and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) announced that they will be partnering during EAA AirVenture (to be held July 28 to August 3 in Oshkosh, Wis.) to form “WomenVenture,” a networking and mentoring opportunity for females.

As part of the program, the organizations will host 150 girls in a variety of activities, including flight simulation, workshops, wing rib assembly and mentor sessions.
