An IndiGo Airlines employee at India’s Kolkata Airport (VECC) fell to his death onto the apron after accidentally walking through the open rear cabin doorway of a parked Airbus A320. The man’s job was to supervise aircraft cleaners and maintain a safe work environment. The airline normally places stairs or a jetway only for the forward door, while allowing the back door to remain open to ventilate the cabin, with yellow caution tape strung across the open doorway as a safety precaution. An IndiGo spokesman reported that the tape was in place at the time of the accident.
The FAA has awarded a supplemental type certificate (STC) to JetBlue for installation of the ACSS XS-950 mode-S transponder on the airline’s Airbus A320 fleet. The XS-950 is certified to TSO-C166b to meet the FAA’s 2020 ADS-B out mandate. According to ACSS, “The XS-950 also supports ADS-B in capabilities, such as ACSS’s SafeRoute suite of applications. SafeRoute software products include Surface Area Movement Management (SAMM), CDTI Assisted Visual Separation (CAVS) and Merging and Spacing. Several SafeRoute applications are planned for installation as part of this program.”
Airbus collected some $16.9 billion worth of business during last week’s Farnborough airshow, gaining firm orders for 54 airplanes and MOUs for another 61.
Former JetBlue captain Clayton Osbon, who’s still sitting in a Texas jail, has decided to plead not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of interfering with other flight crewmembers, according to a court motion filed by his attorney last week. Osbon’s first officer locked him out of the cockpit of his Airbus A320 on March 27, after the captain’s actions had caused the first officer to fear for the safety of the flight.
Russia’s aviation safety record has been, by all accounts, poor the past few years, with the number of fatal accidents per million flights nearly tripling in 2011 compared with 2010. A recent takeoff crash of a UTair ATR 72-200 from a Siberian airport killed 31 of 43 occupants.
Jet Aviation Basel has added a tail and wing dock certified for the 737-based BBJ and Airbus A320 to its widebody hangar. This new dock platform will help to shave up to six weeks off aircraft downtime during 12-year inspections by providing access to all areas of the tail on all four levels, as well as access for full structural inspection of the wings.
China Eastern has selected Honeywell to provide a variety of its products and services for its fleet of Boeing 737 NG and Airbus A320 airliners. It will supply wheels and brakes for the 737 NGs to improve performance and reduce operating costs, for both new-build aircraft and as upgrades to the existing fleet. It also will provide 131-9 auxiliary power units for the 50 A320s that China Eastern has on order.
Airbus has hailed 2011 as a record year for both orders and deliveries. Tom Enders, the European airframer’s president and CEO, told a January 17 joint press conference with parent group EADS that 2012 will see Airbus facing further challenges to streamline production rates and supply-chain issues, while also focusing on keeping the development of the new A350XWB widebody on track following the November 2011 confirmation of a program delay.
The first 21-meter-long front fuselage section for the Airbus A350 XWB has begun to take shape in Saint-Nazaire, France, where mechanics have begun joining the forward fuselage and nose sections, the European manufacturer announced last week.
Honeywell has extended its agreements with Indian low-fare airline GoAir for the installation and maintenance of Model 131-9A auxiliary power units on 10 more of the airline’s new Airbus A320s. The agreement calls for Honeywell to install the new APUs between 2012 and 2014.
