Silentium Air introduced its 300 series, a customized noise-reduction kit developed expressly for the Bombardier Challenger 300.
Silentium Air has received FAA STC approval for its Silentium Air 300 soundproofing system for the Bombardier Challenger 300. According to Nicholas Houseman, the company’s president, the system will “generally reduce overall cabin noise levels by at least three decibels, which approximately represents an average 30-percent reduction in perceived noise throughout the cabin.
Servizi Elicotteristici Italiani (SEI) has received EASA certification for its lightweight cabin-noise and vibration-reduction system called Silens. The system was approved on an AgustaWestland AW139 and FAA certification is expected early this year.
A new thermal/acoustic barrier package promises to reduce cabin noise by as much as 30 percent. The Silentium Air SPS 360 is a product of Aviation International Management Services (AIMS) of Montreal, which is supplying the kits to exclusive marketing agent Zenith Jet, also of Montreal.
Van Nuys Airport last month introduced a draft environmental impact report for the proposed Noisier Aircraft Phaseout Project. The preliminary plan calls for establishing a maximum noise level for arriving and departing aircraft at Van Nuys, beginning with a phase-out of aircraft generating noise levels of 77 dBA or more on departure.
A passive sound-reduction kit for the Pilatus PC-12 lowers cabin noise by 55 percent in the speech interference level and by 80 percent in the average “A” weighted scale, according to Western Aircraft, the Boise, Idaho company offering the kit. The kit uses a variety of soundproofing materials installed throughout the cabin of the turboprop single, adding between about 90- and 120 lb to the aircraft’s empty weight. The kit costs $21,602.
Noise is everywhere–annoying, tiring and sometimes painful. Since the early days of aviation, when a roaring, clattering engine sat on a wooden frame close to the pilot, and the wind whistled through the wire bracing like a banshee chorus, engineers have sought to make the process of manned flight less noisy. And they have succeeded, to a degree.
• The Los Angeles board of airport commissioners has authorized airport staff members to begin advertising for qualified companies to perform Part 161 noise mitigation studies for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY). The separate studies are not expected to be completed for three to five years.
The FAA selected the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to be the lead partner in a Center of Excellence program on aircraft noise and emissions mitigation. MIT will lead a team from other colleges and universities, as well as industry and government, to research and develop solutions for mitigating existing and anticipated noise and emissions-related problems.
Gulfstream is now delivering the G200 standard with a thermal/acoustic interior, which is said to reduce both aircraft weight and cabin noise levels. The weight saving is at least 150 lb, according to Gulfstream. Acoustical testing is planned for later this month and measured noise is expected to be about 55 dB on the speech-interference-level scale.
