Four men and one woman aligned with Plane Stupid, an activist group opposed to airport expansion in Europe, cut through the chain-link perimeter fence on the western side of England’s London City Airport on Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. They quickly covered the short distance to the closest airplane, a Beechjet 400A parked in front of the Jet Centre FBO, and attached themselves to the nosewheel using rubber-covered chains.

Conklin & de Decker developed a new carbon dioxide calculator for business aircraft. The Microsoft Excel-based calculator provides estimated carbon offset costs by aircraft make and model. Conklin’s CO2 Calculator allows the user to select the aircraft type, make and model and hours flown per year and then predicts fuel consumption while providing CO2 emissions and offset costs per year.

With the goal of saving as much as 470,000 metric tons of fuel each year, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched a Flight Efficiency Plan with Eurocontrol and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization to accelerate efficiency improvements to the European air traffic management system.

Flexjet, Bombardier’s fractional ownership subsidiary, has launched a carbon-offset program for its fractional owners. The company has selected Climate Care, a leading offset provider and division of J.P. Morgan’s environment markets group, as a partner in the new initiative.

Executive charter operator FlyingGroup (Booth No. 439), which has bases at Paris Le Bourget, Cannes and Antwerp, has launched a CO2 emission offset program and has thus become a “CO2-neutral” company, according to Belgian organization CO2logic’s standards. FlyingGroup has promised to cut its emissions and educate customers. Customers are not required to sign up, however.

Edward Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, suggested that the FAA’s efforts to reduce so-called greenhouse-gas emissions were “tangential” to other agency objectives, Daniel Elwell, assistant administrator for the FAA office of aviation policy, planning and development, begged to differ.

Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, wants to know whether the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has plans to regulate heat-trapping global warming emissions from America’s aviation sector.
