Columbia Helicopters has dispatched one of its Boeing 234 Chinook tandem-rotor helicopters to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula to assist with wildfire suppression. The helicopter is based in Cancun on a 30-day contract in partnership with Vertical Aviation of San Antonio and Scala Helicopters in Mexico City. It is Columbia’s first firefighting assignment in Mexico.

BLR Aerospace (Booth No. 2970) has selected Simplex Manufacturing (Booth No. 3421) to market and sell BLR’s performance-enhancing helicopter products in parts of the Middle East and Southeast Asia. BLR, based in Everett, Wash., offers a range of aerodynamic improvements, including the FastFin tail rotor enhancement and stability system for multiple Bell helicopter models.

Bristol, Tenn.-based Edwards & Associates (Booth No. 3981), an affiliate of Bell Helicopter, is delivering a second new Bell 412 to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) at Heli-Expo’09. The company delivered the first 412 last November. The two 412s are replacements for the two 1966 UH-1s that Orange County put in service in 1995.

Improved hover performance in high and hot conditions for the Bell Huey and its derivatives is the promise of the FastFin tail-rotor enhancement and stability system from Boundary Layer Research (Booth No. 2970) of Everett, Wash. The company recently delivered its 100th UH-1 FastFin and announced that Wildcat Helicopters, Kelowna, British Columbia, will become the first fleet customer to install the system on the Bell 212.

It was an unusual report that swiftly sent the Grand Canyon National Park Helitack–this year’s winner of the Igor I. Sikorsky Humanitarian Service Award–into action last August 17. “In the early morning we got a report that there were five boats floating down river with no passengers on board,” said Jay Lusher, helicopter program manager for Grand Canyon National Park.

The Direction de la Défense et de la Sécurité Civile (DDSC) of Marseilles, France, has selected StandardAero to provide PW100 and PT6 engine maintenance services. The total contract value for the first six years is expected to be approximately $20 million. A six-year contract extension is possible.

Investigators are continuing to study why a Carson Helicopters Sikorsky S-61N “Fire King” crashed August 5, killing nine of 13 aboard. This was the first major crash of an S-61 in 25 years.

With the recent wildfires in Northern California reaching historic proportions, the human toll rose as a helicopter ferrying an 11-member firefighting crew from the front lines crashed on August 5, resulting in nine fatalities (see story on facing page).

Sikorsky S-64F, Torino, Italy, June 1, 2008– The Erickson Air-Crane aerial firefighting demonstration S-64 crashed in Lake Aviguana, near Torino, in VMC. The helicopter was flying over the lake at 40 to 50 knots to scoop up water when it hit the surface of the lake. The Italian government is investigating the accident. The commercial pilot-in-command and copilot reported minor injuries.
