A trio of helicopter trade associations–the Association of Air Medical Services, the Helicopter Association International and the Air Medical Operators Association–is recommending the FAA mandate night vision goggles, enhanced vision systems, or IFR-only operations for all night flights of EMS helicopters. The recommendations overlap many key advisories the NTSB made in 2006.
Bombardier Learjet 35A, Goodland, Kan., Oct. 17, 2007–The pilot’s failure to maintain control of the Learjet was the cause of its running off the runway on landing at Renner Field, according to the NTSB.
Hughes 369A, Moulton, Ala., May 13, 2007–The NTSB blamed the crash of the 369 on the separation of its main rotor blade from its tension torsion bar, but
the Board could not determine a reason for the separation. The pilot had recently bought the helicopter and an annual inspection was done just before the sale.

Sandel Avionics has received FAA approval for a new reversionary attitude mode for two of its electronic primary navigation displays, allowing aircraft pitch-and-roll symbology to be presented on the nav display in the event of primary attitude indicator failure. The feature is available now for the company’s SN3500 (3ATI) and SN4500 (4ATI) high-resolution, LED backlighted navigation displays.
Sikorsky yesterday announced the formation of Sikorsky Global Helicopters, a new umbrella business unit for the manufacturer’s commercial helicopters, including the S-76, S-92, H-92 and the Schweizer helicopter line. As part of the rebranding, the S-300c, S-300CBi, S-333 and S-434 will be marketed as Sikorsky helicopters. “The Schweizer name will disappear,” said Marc Poland, executive vice president of the new business unit.

L-3 Avionics is at Booth No. 2526 demonstrating the GH-3001 electronic standby primary flight display, which the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal has ordered for the CH-47F Improved Cargo Helicopter fleet program. The open-ended contract valued at approximately $9.2 million will run through early 2013.
Carson Helicopter Services, Sagem Avionics and Vector Aerospace will jointly celebrate a supplemental type certificate issued to Carson for a five-display glass cockpit on its Sikorsky S-61 fleet at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Static Display No. 25. The “Discover the New Sikorsky S-61 Tour” event will include VIP tours of the helicopter immediately following the celebration.
