Displaying the sort of brand loyalty most manufacturers only wish for, the New York City Police Department aviation unit has taken delivery of yet another Bell helicopter, a brand-new 412EP. This addition brings the NYPD’s fleet total to six helicopters, all of them Bell products.
AgustaWestland has designated Kaigai Aviotech of Japan to sell the AW119 Ke, AW109 Power and Grand in the Japanese commercial market. The two companies also agreed to establish a maintenance and support center for AgustaWestland helicopters in Japan.
Russian engine designer Klimov has revealed its first all-new helicopter turboshaft since the end of the Soviet era and said the powerplant will be aimed partly at re-engining helicopters powered by the ubiquitous Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6.
Agusta A109A II, Edmonds, Wash., Sept. 29, 2005–The NTSB could not determine the reason for loss of control during the maneuvering flight, which resulted in “an in-flight collision with water.” The helicopter was returning to base at night, over the ocean. It followed the coastline at 800 feet msl, then turned away from the shore at about 9:13 p.m.
AgustaWestland has announced orders for six AW139s in Australia. The Queensland Government and CHC, in New South Wales, have each purchased three of the medium twin helicopters. They will operate them in emergency medical and rescue services. The helicopter manufacturer has also won a contract from the Japan National Police Agency to supply five AW109 Power light twins for law-enforcement missions.
Agusta delivered a new A109 Power to the national police of Slovenia. The helicopter, which will be based at Brnik Airport near capital Ljubljana, is valued at $7.2 million. According to Agusta, the 160-knot speed of the new helicopter (the fifth acquisition of the Slovene police air fleet) will significantly cut the air unit’s intervention time.
Cabin entertainment equipment from Flight Display Systems (Booth No. 906) is now available as a factory option on the new Agusta A109S Grand. The system was developed in partnership with Northern Avionics of Milan, Italy, and, according to Flight Display president David Gray, a backlog of orders is already building at the company’s Alpharetta, Ga. facility.
Agusta S.p.A., the Italian element of AgustaWestland, is suing the French procurement agency, the DGA, claiming that an unfair tender essentially eliminated the Milan-based company from the competition for helicopters for the French state.
Max-Viz is at Heli-Expo Booth No. 1469 to spread the word about its eight recently completed or in-progress enhanced vision system (EVS) STC programs for helicopters.
Swiss air-rescue provider Rega is ready to help any similar organization that would like to set up a membership-based financing plan. In a presentation at the Geneva Heli Trade show this fall, Rega spokesman Walter Stünzi explained how the private foundation has relied successfully on donors for three decades. An unusual case now, Rega’s system could yet become a model as it has many advantages over other financing systems, he said.
