Bombardier’s Q400 became the largest Western-manufactured turboprop aircraft to gain approval to operate in Russia and the CIS last month, when the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC)–commonly known by its Russian acronym, MAK–awarded the airplane AP-25 type certification.

Air Canada regional subsidiary Jazz Aviation began operating its first 74-seat Bombardier Q400 turboprop on June 7 on a route linking Toronto Pearson International Airport with Quebec City. On May 26 the airline took delivery of the first of 15 Q400s, all of which will replace 50-seat Bombardier CRJs as the delivery schedule stretches into July 2012. Jazz also holds options on another 15 airplanes.
With conversion of an MOU signed in February, Bombardier last month inked a firm contract with Air Canada regional partner Jazz Air covering 15 Q400 turboprops.
Toronto-based Bombardier Q400 operator Porter Airlines plans to issue a $120 million initial public offering as it prepares for expected competition from Air Canada Jazz at the downtown Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

Air Canada Jazz has signed an MOU with Bombardier that outlines the terms of a firm order for 15 Q400 turboprops, sending a clear signal to rival Porter Airlines of its intention to compete directly on routes from Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport with virtually identical airplanes.
As part of a plan to develop Toronto City Center Airport into a viable commercial hub, the Toronto Port Authority (TPA) has entered negotiations with a local holding company to base a new regional airline at the island airport. Known as Regional Airlines Holding Co. (Regco), the new airline plans to start operations within a year, by which time it plans to inaugurate service to Ottawa, Chicago and New York.
Air Canada signed a new agreement with its wholly owned regional subsidiary, Air Canada Jazz, to adopt what it calls a capacity purchase model to replace the airlines’ existing revenue-sharing arrangement. The new code-share deal goes into effect August 1, when Air Canada Jazz begins accepting payments from its major partner on a per-flight basis.
Regco Holdings CEO Robert Deluce last month announced his intention to proceed with plans to base a new regional airline at Toronto Island Airport this year. The new carrier, called Porter Airlines, would fly 10 new 70-seat Bombardier Q400 turboprops to 17 Canadian and U.S. destinations within a 500-nm radius of Toronto.
It took some deft political maneuvering, arm-twisting, wheeling, dealing and more than anything a lot of waiting, but Porter Airlines finally got airborne on October 23 from Toronto’s controversial island airport amid fierce opposition from environmentalists and Air Canada Jazz.
