London Executive Aviation (LEA) officially unveiled the first of the 10 Cessna Citation Mustangs it has on order during a ceremony at Farnborough Airport on Thursday. The UK company is now preparing to begin charter operations with the four-passenger aircraft around February 18. According to LEA CEO Patrick Margetson-Rushmore, the charter firm will be able to operate the Mustang for about 25 to 30 percent less than the Citation Bravo.

Despite one aircraft manufacturer’s claims, “very light jets are only evolutionary, not revolutionary,” noted Arie-Willem Van Doome, COO of Netherlands-based air-taxi firm Bikkair, which started operations last week with a Cessna Citation Mustang. Nimbus Group, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. firm that had until recently maintained its intention of buying very light jets to establish a nationwide air-taxi service, named Dr. Michael Wellikoff chairman and interim CEO. Wellikoff, a dentist, replaced Ilia Lekach, under whom the company last year failed to obtain financing to complete a highly promoted purchase of 1,000 Eclipse 500 very light twinjets.

First, to bring the issue into sharper focus, it is important to distinguish between the very light jet (VLJ) itself and the air-taxi concept.

Jim Christiansen, 54, is leaving charter/management/fractional ownership provider TAG Aviation USA after managing its integration with Wayfarer Aviation over the last two years. The business aviation veteran, chairman of the Fractional Ownership Aviation Rulemaking Committee (FOARC) and former president of Wayfarer, was named executive v-p and COO of TAG Aviation USA when the merger was completed in late 1999.
