A recent Eurocontrol-sponsored VLJ workshop gave the agency and potential operators the opportunity to discuss the impact of the coming class of very light jets (VLJs) on the ATC system. While Eurocontrol suggests that the small jets will tax the system, representatives from the business aviation sector maintain that they will not have a dramatic impact on the system.

The Air Taxi Association was officially launched today as a way to bring together companies that operate principally VLJs on a per-seat, on-demand basis, though at least one operator is using piston-driven Cirrus SR22s for the job. The eight founding members include familiar names such as budding Eclipse 500 operator DayJet, as well as some lesser-known start-ups such as Atlanta’s Imagine Air and Switzerland’s Jetbird.

Eclipse Aviation’s announcement of a 180-airplane order at EBACE signaled the launch of a very light jet (VLJ) air-taxi operation that will be based in Turkey. The order was placed by Eclipse Eastern European distributor Etirc Aviation, which will also be responsible for helping Eclipse obtain Turkish certification of the Model 500.

Eclipse Aviation’s announcement of a 180-airplane order yesterday signaled the launch of a very light jet (VLJ) air-taxi operation that will be based in Turkey. The Eclipse 500 order–including 120 firm sales and 60 options–was placed by Eclipse Eastern European distributor Etirc Aviation and is Eclipse’s largest European order to date. The Eclipse order book now stands at just under 2,700 airplanes.

At the Embraer booth (No. 7510) yesterday, fractional operator Executive AirShare announced an order for seven Phenom 100 very light jets (VLJs) for delivery in the summer of 2010, with options for seven more. Embraer also revealed that Premier Aviation signed a contract at EBACE for four Phenom 100s that were already included in the Phenom backlog.

Eurocontrol plans to launch a so-called Very Light Jet Integration Platform (VIP) to discuss issues relating to the introduction of the new generation of business/personal aircraft. But is the European air traffic management agency overestimating the potential impact VLJs will have on the crowded European airspace or are the concerns warranted?
