Parker Aerospace companies are supplying a wide range of systems and components to airframes that range from the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 airliners to the unmanned combat aircraft, including the first inert gas generating system (IGGS) for an Airbus aircraft.
General Electric Aircraft Engine Services’ facility at Nantgarw in south Wales is preparing to overhaul and repair the Engine Alliance’s GP7200 powerplant for the Airbus A380 super-large airliner. The program is part of a $10 million budget that will support infrastructure for the new engine over the next three to five years.
The mammoth A380 made a triumphal arrival on the Paris Air Show’s center stage here yesterday morning. Airbus’ long-awaited double-decker airliner drew exhibitor set-up staff from the halls and chalets to marvel as it gracefully (and almost silently) appeared on the Le Bourget horizon.
“It’s not a special process and we are following the same principles that we would for a small aircraft. The physics are the same,” said Dr. Norbert Lohl, certification director for the European Aviation Safety Agency, giving a somewhat modest assessment of the task his team has taken on to approve the world’s largest commercial airliner, the Airbus A380.
Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corp. is showing its range of expertise in the aerospace field here in Paris, highlighting its recent developments in the civil realm, such as a 5,000-psi hydraulic power generation and fluid conveyance system used in the Airbus A380.
CMC Electronics is here at the Paris Air Show with a compact satcom antenna, an integrated glass cockpit for helicopters, a second-generation electronic flight bag (EFB) and a new line of opto-electronic components.
The Doncasters Group, headquartered in Melbourne, UK, recently signed its largest single contract in its 226-year history to produce turbo-machinery for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner auxiliary power unit (AP5000). The alliance with Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems of San Diego, California, has potential revenues of $300 million for Doncasters, which employs some 4,300 people at more than 20 sites in Europe, the U.S. and Mexico.
Korean Air has ordered $300 million worth of GP7200s from the Engine Alliance to power its Airbus A380s. The carrier has ordered 23 engines for the five A380s it has on firm order and will take another 13, worth a further $170 million, if it exercises its options for three more. The new order gives the GE Transportation–Aircraft Engines/Pratt & Whitney joint venture a 58-percent share on the A380s for which engines have been specified.
Qinetiq is here at the Paris Air Show with a new sunscreen for heat-sensitive aircraft. The UK-based research company has developed a new range of solar heat reflective coatings. The so-called low solar load (LSL) technology is aimed at reducing air-conditioning, insulation and heat-resistant materials needs.
Everything is going very well with the Rolls-Royce Trent 900, which has logged more than 400 engine hours aboard the Airbus A380 since the very large airliner’s April 27 first flight, according to managing director (airline) Charles Cuddington. With almost 20 flights completed by the beginning of June, initial engine performance is said to be “better than spec,” reflecting earlier experience on the A340 flying testbed.
