Lufthansa Technik (Booth No. 447) is investing “around €10 million” in a new research-and-development center for its Cabin Innovation business unit at its Hamburg, Germany headquarters. Construction has already begun and the maintenance, completions and refurbishment giant expects to move into the 70,000-sq-ft, five-story facility in December this year.

An Australian coroner inquiry into the death of the pilot and seven passengers on board a King Air 200 that crashed in September 2000 has adjourned the hearing until July to gather further evidence. The aircraft had departed for a 300-nm trip to Leonora, a small mining town northeast of Perth, where it was based.

This year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo is history, and indications are that the show has weathered its initial growing pains. In Hamburg, Germany, for the first time, 241 show exhibitors welcomed more than 4,000 visitors to the new venue at the Hamburg Messe convention center from April 8 to 11.

Early next year Boeing will offer a kit for BBJs and BBJ2s that will provide a 6,500-ft cabin at FL 410 instead of the standard 8,000-ft cabin. The kit, which can be installed on green and in-service BBJs, is expected to cost less than $100,000. Components include new cabin-pressure-controller boxes with revised software, a new cabin-altitude indicator and two pressure-relief valves.

Try putting together those beautifully prepared and eminently eatable dishes in a kitchen the size of an apartment closet, with just enough counter space to open a can of soup. Or take a shot at whipping up a soufflé at 8,000 feet, or building an intricately stacked entrée at the same time you’re creating a sauce, grinding coffee beans and serving drinks to a dozen demanding passengers.

Exhibit space for Aircraft Interiors Expo 2008, held in Hamburg, Germany, “has virtually sold out,” according to event organizer Reed Exhibitions. A total of 560 exhibitors attended last year’s show and more than 11,700 visitors from 75 countries passed through the gates. While the primary focus of the show is commercial aviation, business aviation vendors account for large numbers of exhibitors.
