More than 500 business aircraft are now using Arinc Direct services in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and the aeronautical communications and IT specialist is continuing to expand the scope of its support offerings for operators.

The recent switching on of Europe’s Egnos satellite-based augmentation system is great news for flight management system (FMS) manufacturers like Universal Avionics Systems. “With Egnos being turned on officially,” said Dan Reida, Universal vice president of marketing, “we hope to start seeing a stronger interest in space-based augmented FMS. We look forward to implementation of more approaches [in Europe].”
On March 23 at the Aircraft Electronics Association show, Universal Avionics announced it has started taking orders for its next-generation datalink communications system, the UniLink UL-800 and UL-801 communications management unit (CMU). The UL-800 and -801 enable high-speed datalink communications between pilots and ATC, according to Universal, and feature future air navigation system (Fans 1/A) and VHF datalink mode 2 capabilities.
Arinc Direct is trying to help aircraft operators meet the new requirement to implement safety management systems (SMS) by introducing a new process for conducting the necessary risk factors assessment before each flight.
Arinc has added new map technology and automated risk factor assessment for meeting safety management system (SMS) requirements to Arinc Direct, its flight-planning service. Using new map technology from SkyVector, Arinc Direct is offering its subscribers the ability to view in selectable detail a planned route and the aeronautical map data behind it.
International Communications Group (ICG) and Rockwell Collins have demonstrated the compatibility of ICG’s NxtLink ICS-220A communication systems with Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics in the Gulfstream G250, the companies said. The tests demonstrated the use of controller pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) and automatic dependent surveillance-contract (ADS-C) functions in the G250’s Pro Line Fusion avionics.
The success of data services, such as the General Motors automotive OnStar system, suggests that some hardware manufacturers will eventually make most of their revenue not from the painstaking process of designing and manufacturing physical products but from selling data to owners of their hardware. In aviation, this trend is firmly evident in Rockwell Collins’s purchase of flight handling company Air Routing in January.
The requirement for aircraft flying above FL285 in Europe to have the latest VDLM2 datalink capability begins on Jan. 1, 2011, and initially will apply to all new aircraft delivered after that date. From Feb. 5, 2015, the mandate will be extended to all aircraft wanting to fly above this altitude.
UVflightplanner.com, Universal Weather and Aviation’s flight planning system for business aviation, now has integrated fuel tankering calculations, which the company claims is an industry first. The new system, which goes live this week, allows operators to quickly decide when and how they should fill tanks with fuel during a trip.
International Communications Group (ICG) and Cobham Antenna Systems have been granted an FAA supplemental type certificate (STC) for a dual-network satcom system named Sora that offers both Iridium and Inmarsat SwiftBroadband voice and data services worldwide. The first Sora (the Japanese word for “sky”) system was recently installed and certified aboard a Gulfstream G200.
