Cargo carrier FedEx Express will become the first U.S. airline to begin operational trials of data communications between pilots and air traffic controllers in continental airspace under the FAA’s Data Comm program, a key component of the Next Generation Air Transportation System. The carrier expects to start operations using data communications on November 12 at its Memphis International Airport hub.

Arinc Direct has released Version 2.3 of its iPad flight-planning app, a major upgrade designed to help users eliminate paper from their cockpits and including a new note-taking annotation feature on flight plans. With the annotation feature, users can add notes on flight plans by clicking on the action arrow at the bottom of the screen, then click anywhere on the flight plan and add text. The notes can be emailed along with the flight plan. Two pilots using the app on their own iPads can see each other’s notes via Bluetooth communication between the iPads.

Dassault Aviation (Stand 7090) is here at EBACE promoting “FalconBroadcast,” a new service that will provide operators of Falcon business jets with real-time airborne health monitoring. This includes notification of in-flight events, which may require the attention of maintenance personnel.

The service will be available initially for Falcon 7X operators in June. For Falcon 900s and Falcon 2000s (if they are equipped with the EASy flight deck, which early variants are not) it will be available “later this year,” said the French manufacturer.
