Russian Helicopters, which is redeveloping the Ansat with conventional (as opposed to the original fly-by-wire) flight controls, expects to achieve Russian certification in the fourth quarter, with serial production to start in January. The next step will be EASA certification, expected next year or in 2014. Russian Helicopters is developing a new fuel system to comply with European requirements.

AgustaWestland signed agreements yesterday at the Farnborough International airshow with three key suppliers for its AW609 civil tiltrotor. These major agreements follow a trail of contracts signed with AW609 component suppliers since AgustaWestland acquired the tiltrotor program last November.
The 787 is a veritable showcase for the latest technology from U.S. avionics and aircraft systems group Honeywell.
BAE Systems is migrating “active inceptor” control technology from military aircraft to civil applications–enabling direct pilot inputs into the flight controls of commercial fly-by-wire (FBW) aircraft. The UK-based company is developing its civil active control stick (ACS) for an unnamed commercial launch customer.
In its final report into the loss of an Air France Airbus A330 over the South Atlantic on June 1, 2009, French air accident investigation agency BEA (Bureau d’Enquetes et d’Analyses) has managed to explain most–but not all–of the pitch-up inputs by the pilot who was flying the aircraft at the time of the accident during the last minutes of Air France Flight 447.
As Bombardier works day and night to achieve its goal of flying the first CSeries test airplane by the end of this year, its many suppliers are working just as hard to make sure they meet their goals, defined by the Canadian airframer as “delivering out-of-the-box maturity on schedule and on specification.” Training systems specialist CAE is one of those suppliers, and in fact plays a central role.
The Gulfstream G280 joined a small but growing list of aircraft that are subject to special conditions from the FAA meant to prevent unauthorized “connectivity to, or access by, external systems and networks.” An FAA spokesman told AIN that “similar cybersecurity protection special conditions have already been applied” to the Airbus A350; Boeing 767-2C, 787-8 and 747-8; Bombardier C Series; Embraer Legacy 500; and Gulfstream G650.
Russian Helicopters is redeveloping the Kazan Ansat light twin with conventional flight controls, rather than the fly-by-wire (FBW) system with which it has been flying thus far in military applications. “No FBW civil helicopter had been certified before and no standard requirements existed,” Russian Helicopters explained. Certification is expected in the second half of this year.
Denny Fitch, famous for his role in helping fly a crippled United Airlines DC-10 and saving the lives of 185 persons aboard, died last week in St. Charles, Ill., at the age of 69.
Six months after launching its midsize Citation Latitude, Cessna (Stand 7081) announced at EBACE this morning that it will offer a $25.9 million (2012 dollars) stretched version–the “Longitude–that can fly 4,000 nm at Mach 0.82.
