The FAA’s decision to relegate the GPS Cat 1 local-area augmentation system (LAAS) to a mere R&D program (AIN, March 2004, page 1) came as little surprise to either administration officials or industry.
By this summer, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University expects that the flight-training fleets at its Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz. campuses will be fully equipped with automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) avionics. Between 40 and 50 aircraft–primarily Cessna 172s and Piper Seminoles–at each location will receive ADS-B installations.
Weather data specialist Meteorlogix is stepping up efforts to get its line of aviation-related products out in front of corporate pilots. As the biggest provider of weather services to the airlines, the company already has a foothold in aviation, yet it admits that its name is not as well known in business aviation circles as that of its nearest competitor, WSI of Andover, Mass.
Arinc and Aeromech have announced plans to offer RVSM upgrade packages to owners and operators of Cessna Citations, Beechjets and Hawkers. The packages will be available beginning this month for the Cessna Citation 650, Beechjet 400/Mitsubishi 300 and Hawker 700, according to the companies.

Starting in November, countries in Europe will start requiring operators to be approved for Precision Rnav (PRnav) if they intend to use their Rnav equipment in terminal areas that have Rnav procedures.
In the fall, CAE SimuFlite is scheduled to have its first Citation X simulator ready for initial and recurrent pilot and mechanic training. The FAA level-D simulator, installed at SimuFlite’s Dallas facility, is equipped with a Honeywell SPZ-7600 digital autoflight control system, Universal UNS-1D flight management system with GPS, Enhanced GPWS, TCAS II and moving-map display.
Honeywell and Meggitt Avionics are partnering to certify an avionics upgrade package for the King Air C90. The standard retrofit package will comprise a Bendix/King three-axis KFC 250 flight control system and Meggitt’s Magic EFIS, which includes an air data/attitude and heading reference system and primary flight and navigational displays. The price is expected to be $125,000 plus installation.
