There were gray clouds overhead during most of the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2011, held April 5 to 8 in Hamburg, Germany, but there were silver linings inside the exhibit halls as 7,900 visitors descended on the annual show, comfortably eclipsing last year’s total of 7,300.

This year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo is history, and indications are that the show has weathered its initial growing pains. In Hamburg, Germany, for the first time, 241 show exhibitors welcomed more than 4,000 visitors to the new venue at the Hamburg Messe convention center from April 8 to 11.

Despite the worldwide economic slump and the threat of war in Iraq, the fourth annual Aircraft Interiors Expo 2003 opened its doors at Germany’s Hamburg Messe conference center in late February, and organizers and exhibitors alike appeared pleasantly surprised at the industry response to this largest expo to date.

Exhibit space for Aircraft Interiors Expo 2008, held in Hamburg, Germany, “has virtually sold out,” according to event organizer Reed Exhibitions. A total of 560 exhibitors attended last year’s show and more than 11,700 visitors from 75 countries passed through the gates. While the primary focus of the show is commercial aviation, business aviation vendors account for large numbers of exhibitors.

With more than 340 exhibitors signed up by late February, organizers of the fifth Aircraft Interiors Expo 2004 (scheduled to be held from March 30 to April 1 in Hamburg, Germany) expect this show to be the biggest yet, “at least 35 percent bigger than last year.” This year’s show will be highlighted by an interior mockup of the Boeing 7E7 cabin.

Hamburg, Germany, plans to present the first Crystal Cabin Awards at the annual Aircraft Interiors Expo, to be held in the city from April 17 to 19 next year. The awards will be divided into several design categories, including comfort and health, environmental, entertainment and communication, innovation, safety and security, and future concepts, as well as an overall winner. Winners will receive a Crystal Cabin trophy.

The world’s aerospace industry is now having to decide whether to follow the Asian Aerospace show brand up to Hong Kong or whether to stay loyal to Singapore and support the new Changi International Air Show.
