Northeast State Community College (NeSCC) and Bell Helicopter Piney Flats have announced an educational collaboration to develop the next generation of aircraft technicians and aviation professionals. The collaboration is the foundation of a long-term strategy to promote advanced technical training throughout the region.

In a ceremony held this morning at Van Nuys (Calif.) Airport, Clay Lacy Aviation owner Clay Lacy donated two “historic” jets to the local aviation maintenance school, North Valley Occupational Center-Aviation (NVOC-Aviation). NVOC-Aviation is operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District adult education program and offers one of the most inexpensive ways for aspiring aircraft mechanics to study for the FAA mechanic certificate with airframe and powerplant ratings, with the 2.5-year full-time program costing just $2,400.

Banyan Air Service honored its employees and celebrated its ninth annual Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT Day) on May 23, paying tribute to Charles Taylor, the first AMT. Taylor built Orville and Wilbur Wright’s engine.

The 14th Annual Great Lakes Aviation Conference, which includes a maintenance symposium for technicians, is being held February 14-15 at The Lansing Center in Lansing, Mich. The symposium offers sessions that can be used to log eight hours of training to meet annual Inspection Authorization renewal requirements.

During the Paris Air Show aerospace media dinner on Sunday at the Aero Club de France, the Flight Safety Foundation presented its Cecil A. Brownlow Publication Award to FAA Safety Briefing, the bimonthly publication and active online community serving pilots, flight instructors and aircraft technicians that is produced by the U.S. FAA. The FSF said the award is usually presented at the organization’s annual International Air Safety Summit, but this year it decided to bestow the award at the Paris Air Show.

Maintenance, repair and overhaul facility Professional Pilots Aircraft Maintenance (PPAM), located in the Professional Jet Center at Plymouth, Mass., was established in 2004 as part of a natural progression of PPAM’s owner Don Staszko’s life in aviation.

Staszko served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970 to 1978; he was an F-4 pilot and is a Vietnam veteran. In 1973 he traded in active duty service for the reserves, was hired by American Airlines as a Boeing 727 flight engineer and was laid off the next year, a victim of the OPEC oil embargo.

The Aircraft Mechanics Program at Southern California’s Van Nuys Airport, a vital part of the local aviation community for more than 30 years, was almost forced to close its doors this year when its rent rose to $12,000 per month. Established by the Los Angeles Unified School District, and run by the district’s North Valley Occupational Center, the school trains nearly 200 students a year in airframe and powerplant maintenance.

Taylor, the first aircraft maintenance technician (AMT), who built Orville and Wilbur Wright’s engine. At a time when new student starts in aviation technical schools are down and industry technician retention is low, Banyan uses the event to honor its aircraft maintenance technicians, avionics team and parts team.

Aeronautical Professionals Malta (AP Malta), an EASA-approved Part 147 training provider located in the Mediterranean island of Malta, is offering two aircraft type training courses (valued at more than €15,000, or approximately $23,000) as raffle prizes during EBACE 2013. The two-year-old company offers aircraft type training to engineers, airworthiness review staff and aircraft mechanics.

Michelin and the FAA Safety Program (FAAST) have partnered to offer pilots and aircraft maintenance technicians a free online tire maintenance course titled The Impact of Tire Maintenance on Aircraft Safety. “Tire maintenance is often overlooked in aviation; this course will help reinforce this important part of aviation safety,” said Brad Beall, Michelin Aircraft Tire zone director for North and South America.
