If you think the next-generation air transportation system (NextGen) is still far down the flyway, consider this. Starting in September, the FAA, in conjunction with Eurocontrol, will begin teaching courses in performance-based navigation (PBN) in all International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regions.
Local airports frequently attract negative attention. Ocean County, N.J. officials are trying to fend off this perception by emphasizing the local airport’s potential to help industry develop, thereby reducing the tax burden for residents. Ocean County officials envision county-owned R.J. Miller Airpark (MJX) in Tom’s River, N.J., developing into a major business aviation center, serving the area between New York and Philadelphia.
According to many aviation consultants, aviation is about to enter a period of growth broader than it has experienced in quite a while. Several world events–including the rising cost of fuel–are driving this growth. It seems many operators are replacing their older corporate aircraft with modern, more fuel-efficient aircraft. First-time operators acquiring new aircraft are also driving growth.
XJet’s private jet facility at Denver’s Centennial Airport opened late last month. XJet members get to use the new facility, which will eventually include four large hangars for member aircraft, a lounge, library, fine art gallery, conference rooms, underground car parking and a five-star restaurant. House and Senate bills to require all airport employees with access to secure and sterile areas of an airport to undergo metal detection screening in the same manner as airline passengers is drawing criticism from the National Air Transportation Association (NATA).
Those flying to Cancun may soon get some relief from the near-constant congestion and lengthy delays. Mexican airport operator Asur said last month it was planning to build a new parallel runway at the resort town. The 2,800-meter (9,186-foot) runway, which will cost Asur $56 million, should be completed by 2009, the company said. According to company officials, the runway will be able to handle up to 80 operations an hour.
The Department of Transportation Office of the Inspector General (IG) said in a report released last Thursday that runway incursions remain a persistent, serious problem, despite the FAA’s efforts to reduce their frequency.
