Buyers of new Bell helicopters now get a two-year subscription to the Web-based SkyBooks electronic logbook system for each helicopter purchased beginning with August 2008 certifications. The full-service SkyBooks subscription comes with purchase of a Bell 206B, 206L, 407, 412 and 427, each with specific serial-number applicability.
The FAA’s approach to Airworthiness Directive (AD) compliance was a significant feature in the Department of Transportation’s Independent Review Team report on “Managing Risks in Civil Aviation.” The team was formed after the FAA suffered what the report called a “perfect storm” earlier this year during AD compliance issues with Southwest Airlines and American Airlines.
European and U.S. regulators have agreed to mandate “aircraft level” action for Rolls-Royce Trent 800-powered Boeing 777s and are considering potential action for other certified aircraft/engine combinations. This follows recommendations in an interim UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report published Thursday into the British Airways 777 accident at London Heathrow Airport in January.

The FAA issued a new Airworthiness Directive today that warns of a failure by the flight guidance control system (FGCS) in certain Embraer E170s and E190s to display some “caution” messages when warranted. Embraer has found that that certain Honeywell Primus Epic software loads–namely, versions 17.3, 17.4, 17.5, 17.6 and 17.7 installed in the E170 and versions 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7 installed in the E190–triggered the failures.
The FAA and Pratt & Whitney Canada believe they have found the cause of three high-altitude double engine flameouts on Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5-powered Beechjets between mid-2004 and mid-2006.
