Airworthiness Directive

The FAA is proposing to adopt a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A engines. The proposed AD was prompted by in-service events involving the perforation of engine cases as a result of the liberation of power-turbine blades and the fracture/displacement of the power-turbine containment ring.

The Eurocopter EC135 light twin helicopter is facing more trouble after the EASA issued an emergency airworthiness directive on December 19 referring to a manufacturer alert service bulletin that requires a one-time check of fuel probes and, possibly, cleaning and replacement. The issue, discovered by Bond Air Services, appears to be that the probes are indicating a fuel level higher than actual. Investigations showed that the incorrect signals that the probes transmit to the indicator may also inhibit the amber “fuel caution” light.

Incorrect data in aviation records is serious in the extreme. Aviation depends on data entry to record everything from student pilot training to air carrier compliance with airworthiness directives to scores of information on every aspect of defeating gravity safely. For that reason, air safety relies in large part on records, the accuracy of which is critical.

The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive (AD)–2013-22-19–for the Gulfstream V and GV-SP to address unrelated problems with fuel boost pumps.

 The FAA is reminding aircraft operators through a special airworthiness information bulletin– NOTC5068, issued November 22–about a few idiosyncrasies to keep in mind when updating aircraft navigational databases. “The cyclical updates may exclude certain navigation data, including approach procedures, which makes this information unavailable for selection on the aircraft flight management system or navigation equipment,” warned the bulletin.

The FAA has issued a final rule to adopt a new Airworthiness Directive (AD) for the sliding doors on the Eurocopter AS350B, AS350BA, AS350B1, AS350B2, AS350B3, AS350C, AS350D, AS350D1, AS355E, AS355F, AS355F1, AS355F2, AS355N and AS355NP. The AD does not apply to aircraft that have modification AL 4262. The AD, which requires removing specified nuts and washers from the lower ball-joint bolt, was prompted by a report of a sliding door detaching from the helicopter in flight.

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive for the Embraer Phenom 300. The Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil, Brazil’s civil aviation authority, has issued an emergency AD stating cracks in the stator pressure plate of the brake assembly have been found that could lead to loss of brake parts on the runway, reduced braking capability and possible runway excursion. Corrective action requires an inspection for cracks, with repair or replacement as necessary.

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive for certain Bombardier CL600-2B16s (CL601-3A, CL601-3R, and CL604 variants). It was prompted by reports of airspeed mismatch between the pilot’s and copilot’s airspeed indicators during or after heavy rain. The AD requires inspecting for drain bottles having certain part numbers and replacing affected drain bottles.

An airworthiness directive for the Eurocopter AS332C, AS332L, AS332L1, AS332L2 and EC225LP requires inspecting the intermediate gearbox (IGB) fairing for a crack and inspecting the IGB fairing gutter for a crack, separation or interference. The AD was prompted by reports of cracks, separation of the IGB fairing from the gutter and attachment supports, and subsequent interference with the tail-rotor inclined drive shaft, which could result in subsequent loss of control of the helicopter.

The FAA has issued an emergency airworthiness directive requiring the 73 U.S.-based AgustaWestland AW139s to refrain from flying into known icing and to leave the helicopter’s electrothermal rotorcraft icing protection system (Rips) switched off. The limitation stems from a fire on one AW139 believed to have started with a malfunction caused by improper insulation on a rotor electrical cable. The system was certified by Goodrich (now United Technologies Aerospace Services) in 2010. The AD became effective on October 16.
