A Petroleum Helicopters Bell 407 ditched into the Gulf of Mexico on August 16 after an apparent catastrophic engine failure. The pilot and a sole passenger escaped without injury after autorotating and deploying pop-out floats. The wreckage was recovered and a subsequent NTSB examination revealed “an uncontained engine failure near the third-stage turbine wheel” followed by the failure of the first-stage turbine wheel.

On December 6, attorney Richard Genter filed a lawsuit on behalf of client Charles Duke in U.S. District Court in Indiana. FH1100 Manufacturing Corp. of Century, Fla., has selected an EFIS cockpit from Chelton Flight Systems (Booth No. 2821) as standard equipment on all new 2006 Model FH1100 helicopters. The Chelton FlightLogic system will also be available for retrofit on FH1100 helicopters produced before this year.

Enstrom Helicopter Corp. president and CEO Jerry Mullins said yesterday that he is courting potential investors to support the company’s expansion plans, but that no firm commitments have been made.

“I’m looking for some capital to assist us with that,” he said. “We’re feeling really good about the exposure we’re getting finally,” he added.

A lawyer who filed a lawsuit on behalf of family members killed in a June 15, 2003, helicopter crash began taking depositions from defendant Rolls-Royce in March. Attorney Richard Genter of Jenkintown, Pa., filed the lawsuit on May 12 last year in the U.S. District Court of Hawaii. Genter is representing the families of the three passengers killed during a sightseeing flight in an MD 500D over Volcanoes National Park near Hilo, Hawaii.
