American Eagle will cut its daily schedule by 37 flights at New York La Guardia Airport, 34 flights in Chicago and seven in Boston, close its stations in Albany, N.Y.; Harrisburg, Pa.; Providence, R.I.; San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and Samana, Dominican Republic; and ground 29 of its 37-seat Embraer ERJ 135s along with 25 Saab 340 turboprops as American Airlines proceeds with plans to slash capacity this fall by 12 percent systemwide.
As Chautauqua Airlines took delivery of its first four 44-seat Embraer ERJ-140s on December 1, the Air Line Pilots Association prepared to intensify efforts to bar the Indianapolis-based airline–or any carrier other than American Eagle–from providing feed for American Airlines under the American Connection marketing identity.
American Airlines has responded to a contractual limit on ASM growth at its regional affiliates with a plan to strip the AA* code from certain St. Louis-based flights operated by American Connection partners Chautauqua, Trans States and Corporate Airlines. American claims the move will give it another six to nine months to decide the fate of its San Juan, Puerto Rico-based Executive Airlines subsidiary.
Chautauqua Airlines on November 1 became the fifth regional airline to fly as Delta Connection, when a new 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 took off from Columbus, Ohio, on its first scheduled flight to Orlando, Fla. On the same day Chautauqua began service between Columbus and Tampa, one of three daily round trips between the Delta system’s new city pair.
St. Louis-based regional carrier Trans States Airlines canceled 12 flights last night and at least 40 more today to check nosewheel steering mechanism relay switches on its Embraer ERJ 145s. The internal audit comes as the FAA continues a sweep of U.S. airline inspection records that most recently saw thousands of flights canceled by American Airlines last week.
St. Louis-based Trans States Airlines announced last month that it will retire its last six BAe Jetstream 41s by the fall and end its American Connection service to Columbia, Springfield and Joplin, Mo.; and Decatur and Springfield, Ill. American Connection partner RegionsAir has offered to negotiate with the affected communities to fly its 19-seat Jetstream 31s to St. Louis.
Trans States and Chautauqua Airlines will serve seven new destinations from St. Louis starting September 5 as part of a push by American Airlines to replenish its downsized hub with regional jets. At the same time the airline will end American Connection service between St. Louis and Dallas Love Field, a route Trans States now flies for American directly against Southwest Airlines.
Three regional airlines will fill the service void left in 12 small and medium-size communities in six states by the March 9 closure of Smyrna, Tenn.-based Regions-Air. Great Lakes Aviation has emerged as the big winner of the trio, drawing half the cities in a new contract with American Airlines that calls for the Cheyenne, Wyo.-based regional to fly from St.
Smyrna, Tenn.-based RegionsAir had to suspend all service indefinitely on March 9 after the FAA for the second time in a week halted operations for inadequacies in its line check airman and certification program. The action affected all 12 of RegionsAir’s routes, nine of which it flew with 19-seat BAe Jetstream 32s as an American Connection affiliate from St. Louis and the remaining three as a Continental Connection partner from Cleveland.
