TDW, a subsidiary of MBDA in Germany, claims to be the first to successfully demonstrate scaleable warhead technology. The company noted that today’s asymmetric warfare scenarios require warheads that can be adapted to the type of target. “With present-day effector systems, this is possible either only to a limited extent or not at all,” the company said.
MBDA has unveiled a mockup and video depiction of SPEAR, a turbojet-powered air-surface missile for the UK Royal Air Force. SPEAR stands for selective precision effects at range and the missile is intended for launch from the stealthy Lockheed Martin F-35 (Joint Strike Fighter) at ranges in excess of 100 km.
Turkey has designed and test-flown an air-launched cruise missile. The stand-off missile (SOM) was launched from a Turkish Air Force F-4E Phantom on August 9. It flew for more than 100 nm before hitting its target “with high accuracy,” according to Tubitak-SAGE, the state-owned Defence Industries Research and Development Institute.
A hydraulic leak that, along with inclement weather, forced a NetJets Citation on a ferry flight from Appleton, Wis., to Rochester, Minn., to divert to Minneapolis on January 12 was caused by a break in a hydraulic line, not by a bullet strike. During the post-flight inspection in Minneapolis a broken hydraulic line was found inside the left engine compartment, as well as a bullet hole on top of the right wing with the bullet still embedded.
