The latest and most capable version of the U.S. Army’s Apache attack helicopter could possibly take on more of a role in joint operations with the Navy. Among planned upgrades, the fire-control radar of the AH-64E Guardian will be enhanced to work in the littoral environment close to shore, said the service’s Apache project manager.

The U.S. Army awarded Boeing a $234 million foreign military sales contract to supply 24 AH-6i light attack/reconnaissance helicopters to Saudi Arabia, affirming a long pending order. The Department of Defense announced the contract award on August 29; the estimated contract completion date is Dec. 31, 2016.

Lockheed Martin continues to upgrade its modernized target acquisition designation sight/pilot night-vision sensor (M-TADS/PNVS) for the AH-64 Apache, an electro-optical fire-control system that this year surpassed one million flight hours on the attack helicopter.

Lockheed Martin has opened its missiles and fire control support center in Gilbert, Arizona, combining support functions and resources that were formerly located in two facilities in Mesa, Arizona. The 39,000-sq-ft facility supports special electro-optical repair, modification and test activity for the modernized target acquisition designation sight/pilot night vision sensor known as Arrowhead.
