Turbomeca subsidiary Microturbo (Stand 1543) has completed the first flight tests of its new auxiliary power unit (APU) for the AgustaWestland AW189 helicopter. In-flight start has been demonstrated already, and the test unit has also successfully restarted one of the main engines in flight. “The e-APU60 is performing accordingly with our ambitious goals,” said Pierre-Yves Morvan, Microturbo’s CEO.
StandardAero has signed an exclusive maintenance agreement with Slovenia’s Adria Airways for its Honeywell RE220 and GTCP36-150RJ APUs. Slovenia’s flag carrier operates four CRJ900s fitted with RE220 APUs and six CRJ100/200s fitted with GTCP36-150RJ APUs. Beyond the manufacturer itself, StandardAero is the only independent maintenance, repair and overhaul provider authorized to service the Honeywell RE220 APU and holds a favorable position in the GTCP36-150RJ APU market. The work will be performed at StandardAero’s Maryville, Tenn. facility.
Honeywell has extended its agreements with Indian low-fare airline GoAir for the installation and maintenance of Model 131-9A auxiliary power units on 10 more of the airline’s new Airbus A320s. The agreement calls for Honeywell to install the new APUs between 2012 and 2014.
Aircraft auxiliary power units (APUs) can now remain on while radiation checks are conducted on aircraft entering the country, as long as the exhaust vents for those units are eight feet above the ground or higher. NBAA said the shutdown requirement emerged when Customs agents began screening all aircraft arriving in the U.S. using radiation isotope identifier devices, causing “significant ground delays.”
Honeywell (Booth No. 2600) said by the end of this year OEMs, including Bombardier and Gulfstream, will have completed more than 400 conversions of the Honeywell 36-100 auxiliary power unit (APU) to the more quiet and reliable 36-150 APU. Honeywell claims the 36-150 is 50 percent more reliable than the Dash 100 and ten decibels quieter at the APU engine inlet.
Toulouse, France-based Microturbo is here exhibiting a mockup of its e-APU, a new-generation auxiliary power unit that is currently undergoing ground trials. According to company engineers, the first test results are showing “excellent overall dynamic behavior.”
Microturbo (Booth No. 1143) is ground testing its e-APU, a new auxiliary power unit designed for new-generation business aircraft that are expected to need more electrical power. The company projects certification and first deliveries in early 2012.
The FAA has adopted and/or proposed a series of Airworthiness Directives (ADs) that will affect operators of Honeywell ALF502/507 and TFE731 engines and Sundstrand APUs. ALF502L-2 and L-2C engine compressor discs may have had too much disc balance material removed, which could cause premature fracturing of the disc.
Dallas Airmotive’s Carpenter Freeway production facility in Dallas has added overhaul-level authorization to its existing Honeywell 36-series authorized service center agreement. The new authorization covers all Honeywell 36-6, 36-100 and 36-150 APUs used in business and general aviation applications.
