Qatar Airways (Stand C130) is again at the Dubai Airshow on Emirates Airlines’ home turf evidently to remind its rival that it can’t have this prosperous territory all to itself. Along with Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways, the Doha-based carrier has adopted a very high profile as it seeks to take a share of the market to provide long-haul connecting service through its Gulf hub.

Until about a year ago, the Dubai economy laid a fair claim to being the mother of all modern property booms with new skyscrapers appearing on its skyline at a breathtaking rate. However, once ripples from the global financial crisis started to hit Dubai’s shores, it appeared that many of the developments may figuratively have been built on sand without the firm foundation of sustainable demand.

Robert Kraaipoel, 66, a citizen of the Netherlands and the director of Aviation Services International (ASI), an aircraft parts supply company in the Netherlands, has pleaded guilty to one count criminal information in federal court in the District of Columbia. Robert Neils Kraaipoel, 40, ASI’s sales manager, also a citizen of the Netherlands, and son of Robert Kraaipoel, entered the same plea.

Qatar Airways is getting into the private charter business with the launch of its Qatar Executive subsidiary. The new operation, which will be based at Doha International Airport, took delivery of two new Bombardier Challenger 605s in June. The fleet also includes a Challenger 300.

Royal Jet and Arabasco launched a joint venture to expand private charter services in Saudi Arabia. Under the deal, Abu Dhabi-based Royal Jet will base one of its five Boeing Business Jets and a Gulfstream G300, respectively, at the Jeddah and Riyadh bases of FBO/maintenance group Arabasco, and will also permanently station aircrew and support staff in Saudi Arabia.

A Tupolev Tu-154 operated by Iran’s Caspian Airlines crashed today near the city of Qazvin in northwestern Iran, killing all 168 people on board, according to country’s official state news service. The Russian-built airliner, one of five Tu-154Ms operated by the airline, crashed just before noon local time, 16 minutes after taking off from its base at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport on a flight to the Armenian capital Yerevan.
