Business aviation in Asia–particularly in China–was the focus of this year’s Asian Aerospace, held in Hong Kong from September 3 through 6. This year’s event also marked the show’s debut at a new venue– Asia World Expo at Hong Kong International Airport–as show organizer Reed Exhibitions moved the event from Singapore after its joint venture with that government ended. Singapore will hold its own show on a new site at Changi next February.
Hawker Beechcraft dominated the business aviation news headlines this week at Asian Aerospace in Hong Kong, announcing 10 new jet sales and the strengthening of its sales network for the promising Asian market. Macau-based charter/management operator Jet Asia ordered four midsize Hawker 900XPs, along with four shorter-range Hawker 750s.

rganizers of the biennial Asian Aerospace event claim that it is “the world’s second most influential airshow.” This is a big claim, since it stands or falls on the contention that either the self-evidently larger Paris or Farnborough shows are less important than the Singapore event.
Business aviation is expected to feature prominently in the new-format Asian Aerospace, to be held for the first time in Hong Kong from September 3 through 6. Among the industry players that have committed to the event so far are Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Pilatus and Sikorsky, as well as service providers Jet Aviation and Lufthansa Technik.
The times, they are a changing. Years ago, during the heyday of new product introductions within a few years of each other and a plethora of international aerospace manufacturers, airshow exhibitors tripped over each other trying to outdo the competition.
The February 2006 Asian Aerospace show at Singapore’s Changi Airport will be the last event in its current format, following a sudden split between the Singapore government and show organizer Reed Exhibitions. Singapore authorities have decided to run their own biennial air show starting February 2008. UK-based Reed is now considering alternative venues outside Singapore to stage future Asian Aerospace events.
Hong Kong is to host the second Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition, Feb. 6 to 7, 2007. ABACE2007 is to be held in the new Asia World Expo building situated adjacent to Hong Kong’s InternationalAirport at Chek Lap Kok. The static airport display is tobe located at the Hong Kong Business Aviation Center.
Asian Aerospace and its new sibling, Asia Defence Technology, open their doors for the last time at the Changi Exhibition Centre today after a 25-year run that has seen the event grow into one of the biggest events on the international airshow circuit and easily the number one in Asia.
