A spokesperson for the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) told AIN that the pilot of a Learjet 60 that slid off the side of Runway 15 during landing June 7 reported experiencing windhshear during the flare, resulting in the left wingtip striking the runway. Aspen winds at the time were reported as 220 deg at 10 knots, gusting to 18 knots, under clear skies.

Despite initially approving the operation of Gulfstream’s new flagship G650 at Colorado’s Aspen-Pitkin County Airport when it enters service, officials there have reversed their decision after a citizen’s group pointed out that the wingspan of the ultra-long-range business jet exceeds the width limit set by local code and the FAA. The airport’s management initially based its approval on the span of the wing’s lifting surface, which according to Gulfstream does not include the winglets.

As of last Wednesday, Bermuda L.F. Wade International Airport will be closed to general aviation and non-scheduled commercial traffic between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. The airport, which recently obtained civil certification, formerly received infrastructure support from the U.S. military for 24/7 ATC operations and aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF).

West Star Aviation has taken over maintenance operations at Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (ASE). The company has located two full-time maintenance technicians there, with Jim Benninger taking the position as Aspen airframe team leader. In addition, due to the close proximity to the company’s Grand Junction facility, it can staff the ASE operation as required to meet work demand.

On Monday, April 9, at 11 a.m. Aspen-Pitkin County Airport will be closed to all inbound and outbound traffic for runway rehabilitation. The $11.9 million project includes repaving the runway, installing conduit for a runway sensor system that will allow installation of pavement temperature sensors and runway grooving. The runway was last repaved in 1983.

Co-owner and general manager of Aspen Base Operation Cliff Runge expects to close on a deal today or tomorrow to sell the FBO at Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field) to Trajen FBO Network, the growing chain backed by private equity firm CapStreet. The Aspen location would be the 18th for Trajen.

Bombardier Challenger 600, Aspen, Colo., Feb. 9, 2006–Encountering what the pilot said were wake vortices from a BAe 146 taking off from Runway 33 at Pitkin County Airport, the Challenger was substantially damaged as it landed on Runway 15. At 50 feet agl, the Challenger rolled hard to the left and the stall warning horn sounded.
