Japan’s Skymark Airlines converted a memorandum of understanding for four Airbus A380s to a firm order yesterday, officially marking the first sale of the superjumbo to a Japanese airline.

A&F Aviation, the new Japanese airline established earlier this month by All Nippon Airways (ANA) and First Eastern Investment Group (First Eastern), will start low-fare services with Airbus A320s from Kansai International Airport, Osaka, during the second half of ANA's 2011 fiscal year, the European manufacturer said today. ANA's 2011 fiscal year begins April 1.

Boeing will deliver Air India’s first 787 Dreamliner by the fourth quarter, Boeing India president Dinesh Keskar said yesterday at Aero India. The announcement follows Boeing’s January announcement of the first delivery of Dreamliner aircraft to All Nippon Airways in the third quarter.

Eastar Jet has signed an agreement with Ameco Beijing for MRO services on the airline’s five Boeing 737NGs. It calls for C-checks and landing-gear overhauls on four of the aircraft. The contract goes into effect next week. According to an Ameco Beijing spokesman, the MRO, Lufthansa Technik and Hawker Pacific are acting together as a worldwide landing gear alliance.

Qantas announced today that it would resume Airbus A380 services between Australia and Los Angeles more than two months after an in-flight uncontained engine failure forced an emergency landing of one of its superjumbos in Singapore. The airline said Flight QF93 from Melbourne would take off for Los Angeles on January 16.

South Korea’s Asiana Airlines has placed a firm order for six A380 superjumbos, signaling its intention to mount a serious challenge to fellow A380 customer Korean Air. Airbus said it expects to begin deliveries to Asiana in 2014. The airline plans to operate the double-decker airliners on “key” routes to Europe and the U.S.

Air Partner is looking for additional partners here in the Middle East to help boost its newly launched JetCard in the region. At October's Business Travel Show in Dubai, the UK-based charter brokering group added the Middle East as a third service area for its JetCard block charter program, which is already established in Europe and the U.S.

Qantas plans to resume Airbus A380 service this Saturday (November 27) on Flight QF31 from Sydney to Singapore and onward to London. The flight, scheduled to depart Sydney at 5:30 p.m. local time, would mark the end of a 23-day suspension of service with Qantas A380s after an uncontained engine failure forced one of the airline’s six superjumbos to make an emergency landing in Singapore on November 4.

Singapore Airlines grounded three of its 11 Airbus A380s to perform “precautionary” engine changes after consultations with Trent 900 manufacturer Rolls-Royce. The move comes almost a week after a Qantas A380 experienced an uncontained engine failure on a Trent 900 during a flight from Singapore to Sydney.
