The grand opening on September 29 of Signature Flight Support’s new FBO at California’s Fresno Yosemite International Airport was an interesting move. Instead of buying a facility and entering into a lease with an airport, the traditional method of FBO building, Signature signed a management contract with the FBO’s owner, McDonald Aviation.

Sugar Land Regional Airport near Houston has renamed its FBO Global Select. “A new name will allow us to market the FBO independently from the city’s airport,” explained Phillip Savko, director of aviation for the airport. “Typically, FBOs that are run by municipalities have an unfavorable reputation. FBO chain Ross Aviation has acquired the assets of an FBO formerly operated by Ronson Aviation at Trenton Mercer Airport in West Trenton, N.J. The FBO–which for now will continue to be known as Ronson Aviation–is the 14th location in the Ross network. Ronson Aviation provides fueling, aircraft maintenance and avionics sales, installation and service and offers 72,000 sq ft of hangar and office space.

When AIN visited Landmark Aviation’s San Diego International Airport FBO in July, the line service crew and general manager Charlie Ferraro were enjoying a respite from an influx of customers the day before. There were about 50 arrivals, mostly drop-offs of customers flying from Los Angeles to attend the hugely popular Comic-Con show at the San Diego Convention Center.

TAG Aviation (Booth No. 651) is substantially upgrading its operation here at Geneva Airport. The expansion includes a new hangar built around the existing workshops, and topped by a four-story office building. The new facility, scheduled to open this summer, will include 61,500 sq ft of hangar space, one third more than the previous surface area, and 9,700 sq ft of new offices.

Dulles Jet Center at Dulles International Airport has been forced to curtail services that made the company appear to be an FBO. According to a U.S. District judge’s opinion last month, Landow Aviation Limited Partnership, which spent $37 million to build Dulles Jet Center on 19 acres subleased from neighbor Signature Flight Support, was never permitted to service transient aircraft or otherwise act as an FBO.

The top FBO in the AIN 2010 FBO Survey–released this morning–is once again Texas City of Sugar Land-owned and operated Sugar Land Regional Airport west of Houston. Long-time favorite Wilson Air Center’s Memphis, Tenn. base took second place, the same spot it held last year after a long run of first-place finishes. This year, Tampa International Jet Center made a big move from eighth place last year to capture third place.
