Aviation–and more particularly business aviation–is increasingly becoming the dominant component in the portfolio of UK public company BBA Group. The London-based group aviation holdings on both sides of the Atlantic now account for close to 60 percent of its worldwide business (out of approximately $2.3 billion total revenues recorded last year).

Tampa International Jet Center (TIJC) opens its doors this month at Tampa International Airport (TPA), providing competition for Raytheon Aircraft Services, which had been the sole operator on the airport.

Air Services at Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport (CLE), has joined the nationwide Aviation Points Exchange (Apex) program. Air Services’ director of outside sales, Robert Specht, said, “First and foremost, the program will be used as an expression of appreciation to our existing customers. We will also use the program as an incentive for flight crews to choose our facility when visiting the Cleveland area.

As part of its strategy to increase its FBO holdings, fractional-share operator Avantair has set its sights on buying or building a second FBO, this one at Essex County Airport in Caldwell, N.J. Avantair opened a new FBO at Camarillo Airport in southern California in August and provides FBO services at its company headquarters at St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport in Florida.

Davis Flight Support, which purchased the former Woodland Aviation FBO at Yolo County Airport in Woodland, Calif., has signed on as an Avfuel dealer. The FBO will honor Avfuel contract fuel program requests and supports Avfuel’s Avtrip incentive program. The FBO has an unusual fleet of crew cars, with Jaguars and Range Rovers available to qualified customers.

On July 18, FBO developer Air 51 broke ground on a new FBO at Lexington, Kentucky’s Blue Grass Airport. Lexington currently has only one FBO, a Tac Air facility. Air 51 intends its Lexington FBO to be the first in a chain of facilities, according to a spokeswoman. The FBO, which will be situated on a two-acre plot, should take four to six months to build and will include a 10,000-sq-ft storage hangar and 6,000-sq-ft FBO terminal.

Encore FBO bought the sole FBO at Frederick Municipal Airport in Frederick, Md., the chain’s fourth U.S. FBO and second with a jet charter operation, avionics and heavy maintenance services. Encore also owns three FBOs in Europe, the most recent of which is in Nice, France.

In the third quarter property development company Castle & Cooke will open a new FBO at Honolulu International Airport, sited on the 3.2-acre former Circle Rainbow property on Lagoon Drive. While the company owns a hangar facility at Van Nuys Airport in California, the Honolulu operation will be its first FBO.

Galaxy Aviation is, for now, a small regional FBO chain with five bases in Florida and ambitions to extend the company’s brand of family-atmosphere customer service to locations in other parts of the U.S.

The growing Encore FBO chain on May 18 added a seventh FBO, the former Frederick Aviation at Frederick Airport in Maryland. This is Encore’s fourth U.S. FBO and second purchase of an FBO with a business jet charter operation and maintenance/avionics facilities.
