Swift Aviation at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport moved into its new facility on the airport’s southwest side last month and is currently providing a full range of FBO services. The 21-acre complex features a 31,500-sq-ft canopy, with a roof high enough to fully shelter a Global Express. Three adjoining hangar buildings have a total of 83,320 sq ft for aircraft storage and 13,260 sq ft of office space.
Signature Flight Support has signaled serious intent to expand its FBO chain outside North America by adding a managing director for Europe. The Orlando, Fla.-based group has hired David Best to fill the new role and has tasked him with expanding its network of business aircraft handling operations throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
TSA Transairco has refurbished its lobby and passenger/crew lounges at Geneva Airport. The Swiss FBO runs Geneva’s original general aviation terminal on the north side of the site, competing with TAG Aviation, PrivatAir and Jet Aviation, which occupy the executive terminal at the western end of the airport.
Chicago-area FBO and maintenance/avionics company J.A. Air Center is building a 108,000-sq-ft facility at Aurora Municipal Airport. The company also operates an FBO at DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport. The $20 million Aurora facility includes more than 60,000 sq ft of clear-span hangar space and 50,000 sq ft of office space.
Jet Aviation is working on plans to establish an FBO in Moscow, offering handling as well as business aircraft charter and management. The U.S.-based group’s Swiss division is running the project and it hopes to have an FBO operational at one of the airports in the Russian capital before year-end.
The FBO that Jet Aviation announced last August would open early this year at Kuwait International Airport has been delayed more than a year. Jet Aviation now says construction of the three-story, 13,000-sq-ft executive terminal will begin next month and be operational by the end of next year. “We were planning the construction of the FBO in two phases to allow aircraft handling services in early 2005,” said a spokesman.
The BBA Group has added yet another European business aircraft handling operation to its Signature Flight Support chain with the December 8 acquisition of FBO Shannon on the west coast of Ireland. BBA purchased the FBO from its private owners for $3 million (E2.5 million).
A new FBO, Capital City Jet Center, recently opened at Bolton Field Airport near Columbus, Ohio. The company is now the sole full-service FBO at the field, according to Doug Blakely, director of marketing and sales. Formed after purchasing the physical assets of CMH Aviation and Bolton Flying Service, Capital City Jet Center opened a new lobby in the airport’s terminal building.
Liberty Air Ventures has signed a 20-year lease for eight acres on the southwest quadrant of Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, where it plans to build a new FBO to serve piston and jet traffic. Groundbreaking is scheduled for this month, and construction should be complete in July or August, according to Liberty Air president Mary Pilgrim.
Monaco Air Duluth, the sole full-service FBO at Duluth International Airport, celebrated its one-year anniversary on November 2. “Customers have been pleased with our facilities and service, and our business is growing accordingly,” said FBO owner Don Monaco. Services include fuel and ground services for general aviation, airline and commercial traffic as well as hangar storage and maintenance.
