Emissions from turbine aircraft are one of the main objections held by those who want southern California’s busy Santa Monica Airport closed, yet in a recently released study, emissions from nearly Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) suggest an unexpectedly severe impact on residents downwind of major airports.
The City of Santa Monica, Calif., has embarked on a two-pronged approach to further its efforts to curtail flight operations at Santa Monica Airport (SMO). The latest effort from the city’s airport commission on April 28 addressed legal issues surrounding a proposed recommendation to limit emissions from aircraft operating at SMO.
While the NTSB’s report on the Dec. 20, 2011, crash of a Socata TBM700 does not yet include a probable cause, the details seem to point to the instrument-rated private pilot’s losing control of the aircraft in icing conditions shortly after departure from the New York City-area Teterboro Airport (TEB). The airplane (N731CA) was destroyed when it hit the ground near Morristown Airport (MMU) in New Jersey, killing the owner-pilot and four others aboard.
Embraer has received ISA+39-degrees C certification for the E190 airliner from Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the FAA, the company announced yesterday. With the certification, the 100-seat jet can fly without operational restriction in airports where temperatures reach as high as 129 degrees F at sea level.
Cessna S550 Citation S/II, Dillon, Mont., May 3, 2007–The NTSB did not determine the reason for the in-flight loss of control of the Citation, which crashed on descent to Dillon Airport, killing the ATP-rated pilot and a passenger. The aircraft was destroyed.
A 32-year-old advisory circular still used as the basis for showing compliance with in-flight icing protection rules is currently undergoing an “extensive” revision, and the FAA has published a draft version of it for comments. The objective of the revision, said the agency, is to provide a “uniform and modern” means of compliance with regulations for ice-protection requirements.
Manufacturers of very light jets (VLJs) will be affected by new Advisory Circular 23.1419-2D, which provides guidance in meeting Part 23 requirements for obtaining approval to fly into icing conditions. Comments on a draft of the circular are due by March 6. The advisory will supersede all previous policies related to ice-protection systems on Part 23 airplanes, as well as an advisory circular on contaminated-tailplane stalls.

German aerospace research agency DLR has enlisted the services of two business jets for some extensive environmental research intended to measure ozone depletion in the atmosphere. On November 4, a Falcon 20E and a Learjet 35A took off from DLR’s Oberpfaffenhofen base near Munich, along with a Russian Geophysika M-55 high-altitude surveillance aircraft.
