The crash of a Régional Fokker 100 shortly after takeoff from Pau, southwest France, in January 2007 was caused by undetected ground ice and excessive rotation on liftoff, according to the French air accident investigation board. The accident killed one driver on the road the aircraft traversed.

Two new online icing education courses were released this winter, one from King Schools and the other by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s Air Safety Foundation (ASF). Both offer a useful introduction and refresher on preparing for icing conditions and dealing with ice-related problems.

Pilots should “activate boots as soon as the airplane enters icing conditions,” according to a safety alert released in December by the NTSB. The alert (SA-014) is yet another attempt by the Board to persuade pilots that there is no such thing as ice bridging and that pilots should not wait for ice to build to one-quarter to one-half-inch thickness before inflating boots in icing conditions.

Total Aircraft Services has announced the completion of icing tests for its CL-300 enhanced-vision system for the Bombardier Challenger 300. The company is now looking for a launch customer to complete the supplemental type certificate process for the system and is offering an unspecified but “substantial” discount off the projected $150,000 installed price.

Fuel starvation caused by accumulated ice crystals was apparently responsible for the engine power loss on British Airways Boeing 777 G-YMMM, according to an interim report issued by the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch. The power loss and subsequent nonfatal crash occurred on G-YMMM’s approach to Heathrow on January 17.

UK-based Kilfrost, which is celebrating 66 years since it helped introduce the first in-flight de-icing systems to keep wings frost and ice free, has developed DFsustain [The initials DF stand for de-icing fluid.–Ed.] from a corn-based glycol called Susterra, developed by DuPont Tate and Lyle BioProducts, rather than the more traditional crude-oil derived glycol.

In an unusual move, the FAA has proposed an AD that would require pilots to view a new icing-awareness training video before they could serve as PIC of Mitsubishi MU-2Bs. The requirement would supplement a 1997 AD requiring MU-2B pilots to take an eight-hour training course about flying in icing conditions.

AgustaWestland is making several improvements to its AW139 medium twin, including flight-testing a de-icing system. Dubbed the full ice protection system (FIPS), the optional equipment is intended to earn the AW139 dual FAA/EASA certification for flight into known icing conditions. This milestone is expected late next year or during the first quarter of 2010.
