Most of the 125 pilots of the German regional airline Con-tact Air went on a limited strike today, disrupting parts of the Luf-thansa Regional European network. Contact Air has a fleet of five ATR-42-500s, six ATR 72-500s and three Fokker 100s, all flying under wet-lease contracts for Lufthansa Regional and Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss to destinations within Central Europe.

American Airlines sister company AMR Leasing signed a contract to sell and lease back the 39 ATR 72s flown by American Eagle unit Executive Airlines. Under the terms of the deal, AMR Leasing will sell all the airplanes to an undisclosed entity that will lease the aircraft to Ireland’s NK Aviation, a newly formed joint venture between Denmark’s Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) and Kirk Kapital A/S.

French-based Thales today announced the success of the first power-on ground test of its new avionics suite for the ATR -600 series, after 14 months of collaboration with the regional turboprop manufacturer. Under an integrated modular avionics architecture, the new flight deck uses AFDX (avionics full duplex switched ethernet) communication networks.

ATR inked a contract last Friday with Vietnam Airlines for the sale of six new ATR 72-500s, valued at more than $112 million. Now flying seven vintage ATR 72-200s and three present-generation ATR 72-500s, Vietnam’s flag carrier plans to expand its ATR 72-500 fleet to 14 aircraft with this latest order.

ATR 72, Munich, Germany, Aug. 24, 2008–The Air Dolomiti ATR 72 was taxiing for takeoff when the crew noticed smoke from the landing gear. Flames were visible as the 59 passengers and four crewmembers left the airplane. Firefighters extinguished the blaze.
