Garmin unveiled the GMA350-series digital audio panel last month with two unique new features for aviation: voice-recognition controls and 3-D audio. The new GMA350 series fits in a box that is pin-compatible with Garmin’s GMA340 series and audio panels made by other manufacturers.

Fans of Bose’s noise-canceling headsets might want to stop by the company’s NBAA booth (No. 6068) to try out the A20. Introduced at the EAA AirVenture show in Oshkosh in July, the $1,095 (retail) headset incorporates some significant improvements from the original Bose Aviation Headset X, which pioneered noise-canceling for aviation headsets when it hit the market 12 years ago.

Bose introduced its long-awaited A20 noise-canceling headset at the EAA AirVenture show in Oshkosh in July and attendees immediately began snapping up the $1,095 (retail) headset. The A20 launch comes 12 years after Bose introduced the Aviation Headset X, spawning keen competition in the headset market and convincing pilots that noise-canceling plus passive sound deadening is the way to fly.

Broadband cabin noise, which can greatly fatigue passengers in even the most finely appointed business aircraft, could be a thing of the past if a new system from Britain’s Ultra Electronics and Qinetiq makes it to market. Early next year the partners are expecting to flight test new-generation hybrid active/passive mounts positioned between the fuselage and cabin trim panels.

Cabin entertainment provider Rosen Aviation and cabin completion and refurbishment specialist Elliott Aviation have joined forces to create a noise-canceling solution combined with an in-flight entertainment system for the King Air 200, 300 and 350. Elliott’s sound management system incorporates UltraQuiet active noise control.

Noise is everywhere–annoying, tiring and sometimes painful. Since the early days of aviation, when a roaring, clattering engine sat on a wooden frame close to the pilot, and the wind whistled through the wire bracing like a banshee chorus, engineers have sought to make the process of manned flight less noisy. And they have succeeded, to a degree.

The European Union is about to launch a massive seven-year, ?1.6 billion ($2 billion) research program dubbed Clean Sky, which will include developing six demonstrators for greener technologies. The European Council of Ministers is expected to formally adopt the comprehensive project next month.
