Maritime security is an increasingly important requirement for most nations with a coastline. The need to protect and secure trade routes has grown in recent years, as has security for offshore oil and gas installations. Fishery patrol, pollution control and search-and-rescue (SAR) remain as important as ever. However, while many nations need to either acquire a maritime surveillance capability or increase an existing one, they may not be able to afford the high price of traditional maritime patrollers.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) of California belatedly revealed that its Lynx multimode radar had been flown successfully on an aerostat during a U.S. Air Force exercise last July.
The appearance of the marinized variant of the General Atomics MQ-9 Predator B at the recent Paris Air Show heralds an export drive for the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) to European NATO countries, as well as Australia, Japan and other prospects. The aircraft at Paris belonged to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which has named it the Guardian.
Atlantic Inertial Systems (AIS) has introduced a new generation of ruggedized solid-state inertial MEMS (micro electromechanical systems). The system improves noise performance and halves the bias of a current inertial measurement unit or single-axis rate sensor. This makes them compatible with long-endurance missions, the company claims.
After acquiring Skyforce, a small UK-based avionics company, in 1998, AlliedSignal (now Honeywell) focused on the European market for the helicopter mission management systems that became Skyforce’s forte. Skyforce transitioned into Honeywell’s Mission Systems business and now the company is expanding its mission management system offerings to U.S. law enforcement and public service markets.
