CESSNA 441 CONQUEST II, ARKANSAS CITY, KAN., JAN. 30, 2002–The pilot and his wife died when, according to early reports, he lost control of their Conquest after the autopilot failed in IMC. The pilot radioed ATC and requested a no-gyro vector to visual conditions. Shortly after the request, the turboprop descended rapidly–losing some 27,000 ft in approximately 14 min–until radar coverage and communications were lost.
Meggitt Avionics said yesterday that it is offering dealers a pre-certification sales initiative for combined orders for its Magic electronic flight instrument system (EFIS) and Magic 2100 autopilot. By placing a program order during the STC phase for a specific aircraft, dealers will be assigned a production slot giving them a priority production and shipping position.
The latest option for owners of Challenger 604 business jets is the enhanced version of the Safe Flight AutoPower system, which was installed and certified under a supplemental type certificate by Bombardier Business Aviation Services in Tucson, Ariz. The system will be offered as an option on new production aircraft or a retrofit item on older 604s.
A third super-midsize Continental last month entered flight testing with a 1 hr 53 min flight from Bombardier’s Wichita Flight Test Center. The aircraft is dedicated mostly to avionics testing, including the autopilot, yaw damper, flight management system, EFIS and Eicas. As of December 6, the first Continental had flown 136 hr on 54 flights since August 14.
Seeking to establish a firmer foothold in the avionics retrofit market, Meggitt last month introduced a new digital flight control system for older turboprops. Developed as part of a broader collaborative effort with subsidiary S-TEC in Mineral Wells, Texas, the new Magic 2100 DFCS is intended for operators of Twin Commanders, King Airs and Cessna Conquests equipped with aging autopilots no longer supported by OEMs.

Cessna Aircraft is here at EBACE, sailing high after the successful first flight of its Citation CJ4 prototype early this month. The FAA is planning to issue an AD to address what it says are potential safety hazards with the popular Garmin GNS 430 combination GPS/navcom.
