The Russian defense ministry awarded United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) a launch order for 39 Il-476 heavy airlifters, also referred to as the Il-76MD-90A. The move is partially designed to convey program assurance to potential customers in China and India. These countries already operate “classic” Il-76s. The new version can transport a 114,500-pound payload over a range of 2,700 nm.

Irkut’s business plan for its MC-21 narrowbody jetliner calls for a total of 1,200 aircraft to be produced, including 257 delivered by 2022, of which 30 percent would be for the Russian domestic market. As of May, Irkut had garnered orders and commitments for 190 airplanes.

Russia’s aircraft engine manufacturers are trying to make up ground lost to Western rivals through a comprehensive process of consolidation and restructuring. The success of this change will have an impact not just on the companies themselves, but also on the ambitious new aircraft programs being prepared under the auspices of the new United Aircraft Manufacturing Corp. (OAK) for which new-generation engines are required.

The Russian Regional Jet (RRJ) bid submitted by Sukhoi, Ilyushin, Yakovlev and Boeing has won the Russian state tender for development of a new 70- to 80-seat regional jet. Russia’s Rosaviacosmos state agency initiated the tender last summer. The winner will get state funding to cover some research and development, provided the rest comes from commercial sources.
