Amid the recent announcements of major fuel companies withdrawing from the general-aviation arena, independent fuel provider Avfuel continues to see growth and opportunity in the market. Over the past year, the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based company has added 57 new FBOs to its network, bringing its total to well over 600 locations nationwide.
A revised specification issued by standards organization ASTM International establishes requirements for the use of biofuel blends in conventional jet fuel, facilitating wider use of cleaner-burning “renewable” fuels made from plants.

The award acknowledges health, safety, security and environmental performance. ExecuJet Aviation Group (Stand 242) won the tender to operate the general aviation terminal at the airport in January 2010. There are about 1,000 movements a month at the facility.
Civil unrest in the Middle East has pushed up the price of jet fuel by more than 30 percent since December. In response, airlines have increased ticket prices, and some have announced they will begin grounding older, less-efficient aircraft types. While no one knows for sure how long this spike in prices will last, it has prompted many in the industry to turn their attention back to the promise of biofuel.
BP has sold its share in Epic Aviation to Dallas-based aviation fuel services provider Downstream Aviation. Epic, which operates as Air BP Aviation Services, supports the fuel and business needs of the approximately 400 branded FBOs in the Air BP network. BP and Downstream have entered into an exclusive brand and supply agreement whereby Epic will continue to provide general aviation fuels under the Air BP brand in the U.S. and Canada.
Shell fuels distributor Eastern Aviation Fuels has added two new FBOs to its network. Co-Mar Aviation at Warren County Regional Airport in Bowling Green, Ky., offers aircraft service, corporate jet hangarage and a general aviation terminal with a flight planning room, meeting room, pilot lounge and complementary Wi-Fi access.
With the deadline for the comment period on the Environmental Protection Agency’s advanced notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) to phase out leaded avgas having just passed, many in the industry remain galvanized for possible effects of the proposed mandate.
The alternative aviation fuel industry continues to conduct flight tests to validate the use of new jet-fuel blends. At the end of April, United Airlines became the first U.S. commercial carrier to fly using a certified synthetic-fuel blend that received ASTM approval last year.
World Fuel Services on Monday announced an agreement to acquire Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Western Petroleum, including its branded aviation fuel distribution business, for $95 million.
