Transport Canada has granted Aviation Partners (API) Canadian supplemental type certificate (STC) approval for its high Mach blended winglets on the Falcon 900 series.

In a complaint filed on December 1 in the U.S. District Court in Austin, Texas, Airbus claims that Aviation Partners “has stated repeatedly…that Airbus’s winglet falls within the claims of the [Aviation Partners winglet] patent, and that Airbus must therefore pay API a royalty for its allegedly infringing design.”
Aviation Partners received STC approval from Transport Canada for its high-Mach, blended winglets on 900-series Dassault Falcons last week. The company obtained an FAA STC in September and EASA approval is expected “imminently.” The company plans to install the Falcon 900 winglets on its first Canadian-customer aircraft in January.
FACC AG delivered the first set of winglets for a Falcon 2000LX to Dassault Aviation yesterday. The company signed a contract with the French aircraft manufacturer for delivery of OEM winglets for the Falcon 2000LX and 900LX in April.
Wing-tip extensions–known as winglets–that reduce aerodynamic drag and improve fuel efficiency and range have become familiar features on a variety of business and commercial jets. Quiet Wing Technologies (Booth No. C10432), Redmond, Wash., says it was the first company to certify winglets on a transport category aircraft–the venerable Boeing 727, many of which are still in operation as VIP-configured aircraft.
The FAA granted supplemental type certification to Aviation Partners for its Falcon 900 High Mach Blended Winglets on September 2. Aviation Partners expects EASA certification to follow shortly. The Blended Winglets program for the Falcon 900 took two years and involved “exhaustive flight testing,” according to the company.
United Continental Holdings has ordered blended winglets for its Boeing 767-300ERs from Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) of Seattle, Washington. With the order, the U.S. airline group becomes the largest single customer of APB, having ordered 375 Blended Winglet systems to date.
Aviation Partners (Stand 674) of Seattle, Washington, said the first certified scimitar-tip blended winglets are now flying on a Hawker 800. The patented scimitar tip is an aerodynamic change to the tip cap of the existing blended winglet, providing an additional 0.5-percent drag reduction over the existing 7.3 percent at long-range cruise.

Since Aviation Partners announced in October that it would begin accepting orders for its drag-reducing blended winglets for the Dassault Falcon 900 series, the Seattle-based modification specialist has tallied firm commitments to equip at least 10 aircraft. Award of the STC is expected next month. Once approved, the $575,000 modification can be retrofitted to existing Falcon 900s.
