Cessna Aircraft yesterday delivered the first Citation X retrofitted with elliptical winglets made by Wichita-based Winglet Technology. The winglets were installed at Cessna’s Wichita Citation Service Center under Winglet Technology’s FAA STC. According to Cessna, the patented elliptical winglets optimize lift distribution, which reduces drag and thereby decreases fuel consumption and increases speed and range.

The recently certified Falcon 2000LX claims a 5-percent performance advantage over its predecessor, the Falcon 2000EX, and Dassault Falcon was looking for an opportunity to prove it. As a result, the company let me fly a new green aircraft from the factory in Bordeaux, France, across the Atlantic to Teterboro, N.J., a flight of about seven or eight hours.
Despite the fact that final assembly of the 4,000th example is now under way, the A320 single-aisle twinjet may be only at the midpoint of its production life, according to Airbus. Marketing vice president Colin Stuart has suggested that a 5,000th A320 could enter service in 2011.
The Falcon 2000LX received EASA and FAA certification at the end of April, and deliveries began in May. The wingletted Falcon 2000LX offers 4,000 nm range and a 10- to 15-percent climb improvement over the 2000EX. The Aviation Partners winglets will also be available for retrofit, which requires “adding reinforcing straps on the upper and lower wing panels and servo actuator door to accommodate increased loads,” according to Dassault.
Dassault received EASA certification for its Falcon 2000LX on April 23, followed by FAA certification seven days later. Initially slated for certification more than one year ago, the 2000LX is a winglet-equipped version of the 2000EX. According to the French manufacturer, the winglets cut drag by 5 percent and boost range at Mach 0.80 to 4,000 nm from 3,800 nm. The first customer 2000LX was delivered early last month.
Aviation Partners signed up a customer for its new Falcon 2000 winglet modification here at the EBACE show yesterday. The company (Booth No. 1655) also has appointed StandardAero (Booth No. 370) as its first authorized installer for blended winglets. Details of the EASA- and FAA-approved “high-Mach” winglets on Dassault’s Falcon 2000 family were revealed here at EBACE.
After two years of development work, Aviation Partners has achieved European and U.S. approval for “high-Mach” blended winglets on Dassault’s Falcon 2000 family of jets. The Seattle, Washington-based company is here at EBACE (Booth No. 1655) with a freshly minted FAA and EASA supplemental type certificate for the latest modification (FAA STC ST01987SE, obtained on April 16).

The first revenue flight of an American Airlines Boeing 767-300ER equipped with Aviation Partners Boeing Blended Winglets left Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Sunday night at 8:35 p.m. with 204 passengers on board and arrived ahead of schedule at London Heathrow Airport this morning at 10:26 a.m. local time.
Aviation Partners also has patented a development known as spiroids. Company chairman Joe Clark’s own Falcon 50 is expected to be used for any future trials with the spiroids, which resemble extended wingtips rolled in-board to form a loop. They are said to have yielded a 10-percent performance improvement during trials with a GII in 2001.
